As soon as we walked in, we ran into some friends and the men started raving about the steaks, "best in town" they declared. I always get slightly worried about steak restaurants, they bring back memories of Loan Star style dining, not my favourite. But I didn't need to worry at all about Char Char, the food is grea,t but so is the style and there are no line dancing wait staff to be seen.
The menu has something for everyone, steak, chicken, salads, dips, fish, even kangaroo. It was actually a bit tough choosing what to eat so we decided to go with the meat platter, $99 for a whole lot of meat! Pork ribs, steak, chicken, kangaroo skewers, chicken wings and boerewor sausages, plus a side of chips! The waitress advised us that it would be heaps of food for three people and there was, if you ordered a couple of extra sides you could feed 4 adults.
Pork ribs are my absolute favourite meal and these were perfectly cooked, fell off the bone and were basted in Char Char's famous Bulu sauce, if you like ribs these are perfect! If you think things might get messy you can even take up their offer of a free bib!
The Kangaroo skewers were so tender that I was pleasantly surprised, Kangaroo can be a little tough but these skewers were just the right size for tasty and tender pieces. The steak was perfectly cooked, we eat medium rare and that is exactly how it came. We got the chicken wings with the Peri Peri sauce on the side and I am glad that we did, the sauce is so spicy, so you have been warned. Boerewor sausages are very popular sausage in South Africa although the origins are Dutch, they are packed full of spices and are very tasty. The chips rock with proper sea salt flakes sprinkled on them. I couldn't fault any of the platter, it was all perfectly cooked, I probably would order a salad to go with it next time though because it is a lot of meat!
Miss 5 ordered fish and chips from the kids menu and I was impressed that it was grilled fish and hand cut chips rather. The kids menu is also a colouring sheet and comes with pencils to keep them busy whilst their meal is cooking. There were other kids meals too like small steak, burger and chicken, plenty of options for kids.
Wine and food does go hand in hand so I ordered a couple of lovely glasses of Sauvignon Blanc, which I enjoyed whilst the little one coloured in. I have a bit of a wine glass obsession and these one past the test, great glasses and delicious wine. They also have an extensive cocktail menu and there were lots of people enjoying them whilst we were there. The beer menu was interesting with some local boutique beers and some international ones.
Char Chars is open Wednesday - Sunday for Dinner and Friday - Sunday for lunch. The outdoor area is enclosed and toasty warm so you can choose to eat inside or in the fresh air all year round. The ribs and steaks are great and their menu has something for everyone. I give it a big thumbs up and so did my meat loving family.
